Online Puppy Class

Online Puppy Class

Team K9 is now offering an ONLINE puppy class to get your puppy the best foundation possible in their critical period through the challenges of lockdown, and ensure you end up with a well-rounded dog in or out of a pandemic!

Online puppy pre-school is a streamlined 3-day course via Zoom conferencing, running for one hour on three consecutive nights. The focus of this short course is on teaching owners how to raise a confident “pandemic puppy” and work through commonly misunderstood puppy behaviours.

Puppies added to families during the pandemic are at a much higher risk of being fearful, aggressive or otherwise maladjusted as adults. This is because 80% of a dog’s brain learning is done within the first 16 weeks of its life and due to Covid -19 restrictions, it is decidedly more difficult for new puppy owners to ensure their puppies are habituating themselves with what we would consider “normal” life. When restrictions ease, we see these puppies being thrown into situations they never knew existed and are not prepared for, which can cause some unexpected behavioural issues such as separation-related behaviours, fear of certain social situations or aggression towards new stimuli. Things that are important to teach within the critical first 16 weeks include tolerance of being handled, independence behaviours – how to be alone, appropriate greetings for humans and other animals, basic impulse control such as not nipping and rushing ahead on walks, and problem-solving behaviours that will make learning more complex obedience a breeze when they grow up.

What you should expect to learn over the 3 days class:

  • How to handle your puppy and speak their “language”
  • Strategies to help prevent problem and unwanted behaviours
  • “Outside the box” socialization exercises that are still possible within Covid-19 restrictions
  • How to deal effectively and efficiently with common puppy problems such as house training, biting, jumping
  • The basics of nutrition, healthcare and appropriate play for your puppy
  • How to enrich your puppy’s life at home and meet their instinctual and emotional needs
  • How to bond with your puppy while creating constructive behaviours for later life
